In case you didn’t know, it’s four years today since Mesut Ozil signed for Arsenal - and it’s been quite an eventful four years for the German. The playmaker has three FA Cups to show for his time in north London but has had to endure plenty of criticism at the Emirates from both pundits and supporters alike. And Ozil thought that this anniversary was the perfect time to confront those critics. He wrote a lengthy Facebook message - which can be seen in full below. And one of the main points Ozil appeared to want to make was to hit out at those that question his ability.

Ozil hits back at critics

"Personally I’ve had to accept a lot of criticism during my time in London. ‘Too expensive, too greedy, bad body language, and lacking fight’ - this is what people have said about me," Ozil wrote.

"Some of these comments are made by those who do not know me, some are made by former players - both successful and unsuccessful during their time here at the club.

"Although criticism is something that all football players have to deal with, I nevertheless expected legends to behave like legends - my advice to these former Gunners: stop talking and start supporting!"

Well said, Mesut.

Ozil saying goodbye?

Arsenal fans would have been enjoying Ozil’s message until the final paragraph.

“Even though I personally do not know how my career will continue after this year, I look forward to my fifth season with Arsenal,” it began.

It sounds very much like a goodbye message...

Like Alexis Sanchez, Ozil’s contract expires in 12 months time meaning he is free to leave the club next summer.

And his comment has worried plenty of Gooners.

Arsenal fans react

Check out the reaction from Arsenal fans, who pleaded for him to stay and sign a new contract:

Why did he have to say it? Couldn’t he have just brushed over the fact that his contract expires next summer?

Either way, Ozil hit back at his critics brilliantly.
