West Brom head coach Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed Gabriel Tamas as one of a number of central defenders he is interested in.

Albion are in the market for a centre-back with Abdoulaye Meite set for African Nations Cup action with Ivory Coast in January - leaving the club with just three fit recognised options at the heart of defence.

Romania international Tamas, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Dinamo Bucharest from Auxerre, has long been linked with a move to The Hawthorns. And Di Matteo has officially recognised the 26-year-old as a target, among others.

"Abou is going to leave for the African Nations Cup after the Boxing Day game so we have been looking to bring in another central defender," he told the club's official website. "We need cover there because we are light in that position."

He added: "He (Gabriel) is one of the options but there are a number of players we are talking to."
