Jackson has been out for a month with a knee injury. He was close to being considered for Monday night`s postponed game at Bournemouth but the Boxing Day fixture was always a more realistic target.

John Thompson returned from suspension to take his place on the bench against Accrington last time out and he will be pushing for inclusion, while fellow defender Stephen Hunt is also upping his recovery as he approaches a comeback.

The game at Meadow Lane will be Dave Kevan`s first since stepping in as caretaker manager following Hans Backe`s resignation nine days ago.

Kevan, who has admitted he is not interested in the job on a full-time basis, must now decide whether to keep faith with the same starting XI - who were in good form prior to the surprise home defeat to Accrington - or make changes.

On-loan defender Olly Lancashire could be fit for Grimsby.

The centre-half was a doubt for last weekend`s postponed game at home to Morecambe after sustaining a hamstring just 18 minutes into the goalless draw at Shrewsbury.

An extra week`s rest will have aided Lancashire`s recovery but Joe Widdowson`s return to fitness after a foot injury could prove timely should he miss out.

Widdowson, along with striker Nathan Jarman, travelled to Shrewsbury but were not included in the matchday squad.

Either Widdowson or Nicky Featherstone, Lancashire`s replacement at the New Meadow, will start should Lancashire be absent. Jarman could also be included after regaining fitness following a broken metatarsal.
