Newcastle manager Chris Hughton expects to have midfielder Alan Smith available for the trip to Derby.

Smith missed the 2-2 Boxing Day draw at Sheffield Wednesday with an ankle knock, but he should return to contention against the Rams.

Hughton said: "It would have been too big a risk to play him (against Wednesday) but he'll be available on Monday."

Joey Barton (foot) is edging closer to fitness but will not be involved, while Hughton has no fresh injury problems to contend with.

Andy Carroll replaced Shola Ameobi for the last 20 minutes of the Owls clash and will be hoping for a more prominent role, although Ameobi has scored in each of his last four games.

Derby defender Dean Moxey will miss out through suspension.

The left-back was sent off after receiving two yellow cards during the home defeat to Blackpool on Boxing Day and must serve a one-match ban.

There are further problems in defence for the Rams after on-loan right-back Fredrik Stoor returned to Fulham. The Sweden international's stay at Pride Park expired following the 2-0 loss to the Seasiders.

Boss Nigel Clough will hope either Shaun Barker (thigh), Miles Addison (foot) or Dean Leacock (knee) will be fit enough to return to the side.

Paul Green could come back into the reckoning after a bout of flu while fellow midfielder Jake Livermore will play the final game of his loan spell before returning to Tottenham.
