Crewe will focus on signing a goalkeeper in January if they fail to persuade Steve Phillips to sign a permanent deal with the club.
The 31-year-old has been offered a two-and-a-half year deal by the Railwaymen. But Phillips appeared to ruled out a permanent move on Wednesday after parent club Bristol Rovers refused to make up the difference in wages under his existing deal and the one Crewe have offered him.
Crewe assistant manager Steve Davis told The Sentinel: "At present, it doesn't look like Bristol Rovers are going to change their minds, so if Steve doesn't sign we'll be looking to bring in a replacement."
He added: "We are still hoping Steve will sign because he has done well for us since joining in November.
"We've offered him the best deal we can, and we're still hopeful he'll eventually sign on the dotted line."
