Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan will be without winger Adam Johnson for the clash against Swansea.

The 22-year-old has been ruled out after failing to recover fully from the recurrence of his hamstring injury suffered during last Saturday's 1-0 FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester City.

He will join suspended striker Leroy Lita on the sidelines as he completes his three-match ban.

Jeremie Aliadiere (ankle), Isaiah Osbourne (groin) and Marvin Emnes (bruised ribs) all have a chance of being available.

However, Emanuel Pogatetz is still out with a hamstring injury, while Seb Hines (ankle and medial ligament) and Matthew Bates (cruciate ligament) remain on the long-term casualty list. Midfielder Didier Digard has completed his loan move to Nice.

Full-back Andrew Taylor was due to undergo surgery for a double hernia earlier this week but the operation was cancelled due to the weather. He is now expected to have the procedure next Tuesday.

Swansea boss Paulo Sousa could have Craig Beattie available.

The striker only featured once in December because of a niggling knee injury followed by a virus.

But Beattie, who has scored three goals in 14 Swansea appearances since arriving from West Brom in the summer, could now be fit to feature at the Riverside.

Gorka Pintado has been a willing replacement for Beattie, but the Spaniard has struggling to find the net with fellow frontman Lee Trundle having to settle once again for a place on the substitutes' bench.

Swansea could have the likes of Angel Rangel, Leon Britton, Andrea Orlandi and Fede Bessone back in contention following a bout of flu.

Winger David Cotterill completed a permanent move to the Liberty Stadium on Thursday afternoon and should also feature.
