Is there any duo that epitomises the Manchester United-Liverpool rivalry quite like Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher?

Two of the finest Premier League defenders of their generation, the pair spent the entirety of their domestic careers with the Reds and Red Devils respectively. Collectively, they boast no less than 1,339 appearances, 123 England caps and 31 major honours.

Furthermore, they just happen to be two of the finest pundits on television screens with their expert analysis and - of course - unique banter.

It's their constant digs at each other that gives the likes of Monday Night Football that extra element of entertainment, augmented by their overlapping and rival football careers.

Football fans aren't starved of Neville and Carragher's back and forth between shows, either, with their cheeky jibes making even more frequent appearances on Twitter.

While the pinnacle of said Twitter banter came upon Neville's sacking by Valencia and sheepish return to Sky Sports, the run-up to Liverpool-United clashes are hot spots of their own.

This year, it's Neville that has taken the initiative and kicked off the trolling just less than 24 hours before kick-off.

Friday marked the release of Carragher's debut column with Telegraph as the ex-Liverpool man expressed his discontent with Jurgen Klopp's summer business and defence.

Liverpool v Burnley - Premier League

Upon tweeting out the link to his article, Carragher referred to Liverpool's attempts to win a first title in 27 years as 'the long quest.' You aren't kidding, Jamie, and it didn't take long for Neville to react.

Check out his oh-so simple but oh-so brilliant response:

Naturally, though, that wasn't all.

Carragher took the risky decision of tweeting again, this time thanking Klopp for his appearance and analysis on Sky Sports' Match Zone ahead of the big match.

Neville's response was savage in numerous ways, take a look:

For starters, the 42-year-old is simply declaring that Manchester United will completely expose Liverpool's porous defence. The Reds have the joint third leakiest defence in the Premier League so far this season, for the record.

However, it can also be seen as challenging Carragher to stand by the defensive criticism that punctuated his column and to stand by his opinion if he faces Klopp again on Saturday.

It seems Jose Mourinho has no intention to park the bus, either.

When asked whether he would play defensively at Anfield, the Special One brilliantly joked: “I play with one defender and nine strikers, don't worry about it.”

Let the war of words begin.
