It’s now 11 years since the final, infamous appearance of Zinedine Zidane’s illustrious career.

The French legend bowed out of professional football in disgrace following his red card for headbutting Italy’s Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final.

But despite that, there’s no doubt that ‘Zizou’ is one of the best footballers in history, right up there alongside the game’s true greats.

Like a fine wine, Zidane seemed to get better with age.

He retired at the age of 34 but could easily have played on for a few more years at the very highest level.

Zidane is - and always will be - a class act

Even now, on the odd occasions the 45-year-old puts on his boots for a charity match, his class still shines through.

Class is permanent, of course, and there have been few footballers blessed with better technical qualities than the former Juventus and Real Madrid superstar.

There are countless compilation videos on YouTube showing Zidane at his brilliant best and no doubt most of your reading this have seen some of them.

If you haven’t, then you’re in for a treat.

Zidane, wearing a yellow bib over a black tracksuit, barely breaks sweat as he makes a mockery of the lads on the opposite team.

Some of the touches he produces are utterly glorious.

Well, as it happens, Messi attempted to do this - as part of an adidas campaign - in London a few years ago.

But when he was mobbed after stepping foot off the Helicopter at Hackney Marshes, organisers were forced to abandon the plan.

Here’s the footage…
