Mark Hughes described Kevin De Bruyne as the best player in the Premier League after watching the Belgian playmaker tear his Stoke City side apart at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. And the Stoke boss wasn’t the only person who labelled Manchester City’s No. 17 the most talented player in England after his masterclass. (Watch his incredible individual highlights from that match by clicking HERE).Many football fans expressed the same opinion on social media.Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, told reporters on Monday that De Bruyne is the “best player in Europe bar one”.

It’s safe to assume that the “one” Guardiola was referring to is a certain Argentine who plies his trade at the Camp Nou.

“To be considered the best, you have to win titles,” Guardiola added.

Whether De Bruyne is currently the best player in the Premier League is up for debate, but there’s no doubt that the 26-year-old is producing consistently excellent performances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The wife of former Man City star Paul Lake, Jo, has even pledged to do a naked conga if De Bruyne doesn’t win the PFA Player of the Year award at the end of the season. That’s how well he’s playing right now.

How Chelsea fans reacted when De Bruyne was sold in 2014

The sight of De Bruyne demolishing the Premier League must be tough to take for Chelsea supporters.

They had the Belgium international in their ranks during the first half of the 2013-14 campaign but, for whatever reason, Jose Mourinho simply didn’t fancy him at the time.

De Bruyne made just three league appearances for the Blues - nine in total - before he was offloaded to Wolfsburg for £18 million in January 2014.

But how did Chelsea fans react to news of his sale at the time?

Let’s trawl through the Twitter archives and see whether they thought it was good or bad business.

Some Chelsea fans were pretty happy

It’s hard to believe now but quite a few supporters expressed their happiness with the deal.

Chelsea had made a £10 million profit on De Bruyne, who didn’t seem to be better than what the Blues had in their ranks at the time.

Others feared Chelsea had made a big mistake

However, other Chelsea fans feared Mourinho’s decision could end up being a mistake.

How right they were.
