Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to win FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award for the second successive year on Monday evening after helping Real Madrid secure the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League last season. The 32-year-old faces competition from Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar for the coveted individual accolade, which will be handed out at the London Palladium. It would be a major surprise if Ronaldo failed to win the award - although not if it were based on performances from the 2017-18 campaign so far.Cristiano has scored just one goal in five La Liga appearances this term while his overall performance-levels have left a lot to be desired. The Portuguese superstar has still been banging in the goals in the Champions League - five goals in three appearances this season - but for whatever reason, it hasn’t clicked for him in La Liga.

Ronaldo had a nightmare against Eibar

Ronaldo put in his worst performance of the season in Madrid’s 3-0 win over Eibar at the Bernabeu on Sunday evening.

In fact, it will go down as one of his worst performances since joining Los Blancos back in 2009.

Nothing went right for the four-time Ballon d’Or winner, who was handed an embarrassing 3/10 rating by the Mirror.

Harsh but, in truth, completely fair.

Zidane defends Ronaldo after Eibar nightmare

We’re used to seeing Cristiano dominate in matches like this, so what’s going wrong?

Zinedine Zidane was asked this in his post-match press conference and the Madrid boss defended his out-of-sorts star man.

"Ronaldo is the best player of his generation, by a long way," Zidane said, per ESPN. "He has shown that many times, he makes the difference in the big games. It is very deserved what he is winning tomorrow, all his prizes are deserved. He always shows he wants to be the best, and he is."
