So, who is the best goalkeeper in the world right now? Most football fans seem to agree there are four stand-out keepers on the planet at this moment in time: Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon, David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois. Then there are other top-class goalkeepers including Keylor Navas, Jan Oblak, Hugo Lloris and Marc-Andre ter Stegen on the tier below. It was 39-year-old Buffon who was named Goalkeeper of the Year at FIFA’s ’The Best’ awards on Monday evening. The Italian legend, who helped Juventus reach the Champions League final last season, gave an emotional speech while picking up the coveted individual accolade at the London Palladium."It's a great honour to receive this award at my age. I'm proud of it, but I want to say thanks to my club, my coach and my team-mates," Buffon said at the ceremony, per Goal. "They helped me to make it possible. I want to say thanks to all the people who voted for me."I think the last year was a fantastic year for Juventus. But it wasn't enough to win in Europe."Buffon received 42.4 per cent of the votes, beating Neuer (32.3 per cent) and Navas (10.1 per cent) in second and third place, respectively.

Wait... where's De Gea?

But there was one notable omission from the top 10 that nobody, for understandable reasons, can quite believe.

Where on earth is De Gea?

Courtois is fourth on the list followed by Lloris, Oblak, Ter Stegen and several other keepers including Claudio Bravo(!).

But bizarrely, there wasn’t a single vote for Man Utd’s world-class shot-stopper.

Football fans are calling it a farce

Football fans on social media think this has made a mockery of the entire ceremony while the Manchester Evening News have described it as a ‘farce’.

De Gea is arguably the world's best

De Gea, as he has demonstrated throughout 2017, is unquestionably one of the best - if not *the* best - goalkeeper in the world right now.

"I think he is the best goalkeeper in the world," Jamie Carragher said last week. "Peter is the greatest Premier League goalkeeper but De Gea is second.

"We have had some greats, [David] Seaman, [Petr] Cech but he is that good."
