Preston boss Darren Ferguson will assess the fitness of defender Youl Mawene ahead of the home clash with Barnsley.

Mawene picked up a knock during Saturday's 2-0 home win over Ipswich and was replaced in the second half by Neill Collins.

Collins scored his first goal for the Lilywhites within five minutes of his introduction and could now earn a starting role against the Tykes.

Ferguson said after Saturday's game that he was hoping to add new signings to his squad before the transfer window closes, but he could again be without Callum Davidson as the skipper recovers from a head injury.

Former Cardiff winger Paul Parry remains sidelined with a knee problem while midfielder Barry Nicholson (broken leg) is a long-term absentee.

Jay Rodriquez has joined Barnsley from Burnley ahead of the game.

The winger will spend a month with the Tykes in a bid to build up his fitness following injury.

Striker Daniel Bogdanovic could return to the Tykes' starting line-up. The Malta international has been struggling with a knee injury in recent weeks, but played the second half in Saturday's defeat at Reading.

Defenders Rob Kozluk and Bobby Hassell both remain sidelined due to knee and groin injuries respectively, while Iceland international midfielder Emil Hallfredsson is hoping to return to the side after starting on the substitutes' bench on Saturday.

Tykes manager Mark Robins has no new injury or suspension problems and is not expected to make too many changes.
