Manchester United supporters have been excited about Angel Gomes for some time now.The 17-year-old, who has been on the Red Devils books since the age of six, has played a starring role for the club’s youth teams since arriving at Old Trafford back in 2006.Gomes is the current holder of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award - an accolade previously won by the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Marcus Rashford - after scoring 12 goals in 19 starts for the Under-18 side during the 2016-17 campaign. He became the youngest player ever to win the award in the process.Nani once tipped Gomes to become a United superstar while Nicky Butt, head of coaching at the United academy, said earlier this year: “Angel Gomes is someone we've got massive hopes for.”Gomes was handed his debut for United’s senior team against Crystal Palace last May, at the age of just 16 years and 263 days old, making him the youngest player to represent the Red Devils since the legendary Duncan Edwards in 1953. He also became the first player born in 2000 to play in the Premier League.

Gomes is a serious talent

Anyone who has seen the attacking midfielder in action will testify that this is a player with a huge future ahead of him - and he further enhanced his reputation over the weekend by helping England win the Under-17 World Cup.

United fear they could lose Gomes for nothing

However, according to a report in The Sun last month, United fear Gomes could leave them with Barcelona among the clubs showing interest in him.

The report claims Gomes was set to sign his first senior contract with United on his 17th birthday - back on August 31 - but he’s still yet to put pen to paper on a deal two months later.

If Gomes decides not to sign a new contract, he will be free to leave Old Trafford for nothing next summer.

United fans are even more worried after Mata's post

United fans, however, are now seriously concerned that Gomes has decided to leave the club after reading Juan Mata’s latest blog post.

The Spaniard described Gomes as his “former team-mate” and this has led to panic on social media from United fans.

“PS: I take this opportunity to congratulate England for winning the Under-17 World Cup in India. In particular to my former team-mate Angel Gomes, who made his debut against Crystal Palace in the final game of the last Premier League season,” Mata wrote in his latest blog post. “He’s part of a great generation of players that can bring more success in the future.”

United fans are panicking

Here’s how United fans have reacted…

Others think they have an explanation
