Many experts are already suggesting the La Liga title race is over following Real Madrid's underwhelming start to the season.

Zinedine Zidane's back-to-back Champions League winners were beaten 2-1 this weekend by newly-promoted minnows Girona.

Isco put Real Madrid in front but second-half goals from Portu and Christian Stuani secured a historic win for the La Liga first timers.

Los Blancos are now four points behind 2nd placed Valencia and a further four behind their arch rivals Barcelona - who have sparkled despite Neymar's summer departure.

Speaking after the shock defeat, Zidane criticised the focus of his players.

“We did well in the first half but football is about details and the first goal was from a throw in and we weren't focused," said Zidane.

"I don't think we played badly, we didn't lack intensity or effort, we just lost focus at the most important moments and that's why I'm annoyed.

"We're eight points behind but it won't change anything, we can pick ourselves up, we'll have better days than this and our rivals are going to drop points."

Spiky moment between Marcelo and Modric

There is understandably plenty of tension between some of the Real Madrid stars, having failed to win four matches in the opening ten La Liga rounds.

Cameras caught an interesting conversation which took place between Marcelo and Luka Modric.

The Brazilian full-back, being chastised by Modric for needlessly giving the ball away, could be seen shouting at the out-of-sorts Croatian midfielder:

"You say that I've messed up... and you haven't?"

Teammates for more than five years, the duo were later seen making up on the pitch.

Real Madrid face a tricky Champions League clash with Tottenham at Wembley on Wednesday night after being held to a 1-1 draw by Mauricio Pochettino's side a fortnight ago in the Bernabeu.

They host struggling Las Palmas in their next La Liga outing before a mouth-watering clash against rivals Atletico Madrid.

Despite his incredible success since taking the reins in Madrid, Zidane may well find his job under pressure if he can't turn their fortunes around.

Let's not forget that Carlo Ancelotti was sacked by Real Madrid in 2015, less than a year after winning the Champions League.
