Arsenal fans have been extremely critical of Arsene Wenger in the past due to his reluctance to spend big on players.

However, fans could not complain too much this summer; with Alexandre Lacazette arriving at the club for £46.5million.

Wenger also attempted to smash their transfer record with a mammoth bid in excess of £90million for Thomas Lemar, but was left frustrated as they could not get the deal completed in time.

Although this was ultimately a major disappointment, it did show that Wenger's ambition to strengthen his side with the world's best players.

But despite their failure to bring in Lemar, it could still be argued Arsenal enjoyed a successful transfer window.

The Gunners also looked to have brought in a very good defender in Sead Kolašinac, and also managed to keep their star assets, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, at least until January.

However, Frank Lampard believes that none of these deals aforementioned were Arsenal's best bit of summer transfer business.

In fact, Lampard actually believes that keeping Olivier Giroud was the best decision of the lot.

Despite not always being Arsenal's star striker, he still has a very impressive goal-scoring record, having scored a respectable 101 goals in 241 appearances for the Gunners.

And Lampard believes this goal-scoring record, as well as the other qualities he brings to the North London club, makes him a 'great asset' for Arsenal.

In his column in the Evening Standard, Lampard wrote: "One of the best things to happen to Arsenal during the summer transfer window was Olivier Giroud staying at the club.

"Giroud is their Plan B, he can even still be their Plan A on occasion. This is not meant to sound disrespectful. I like Giroud, he has a lot of quality.

"Just look at the goal he scored in the last round of the Europa League against Red Star Belgrade, who they face again at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

"Importantly, he gives them a different option to the other attacking players they’ve got. It is a great asset to have in your squad.

"He can be a presence, hold the ball up and bring others into play, he can help Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and so on.

"I think Arsenal fans appreciate what he does and his goals record is better than what you might expect - there are a lot of impact goals, too."
