We thought that we’d never see an incident of a player attacking a fan ever again after Eric Cantona’s moment of madness. The Frenchman was banned for nine months for kicking a Crystal Palace supporter back in 1995.Twenty-two years later, though, and something very similar has happened. In fact, it’s even more extraordinary with Patrice Evra attacking his own fans. The Marseille left-back had been named on the bench for their Europa League clash against Guimaraes. But during the warm-up, something incredible happened. With the away fans causing trouble, a few Marseille players went over to calm them down. But Evra had other ideas and appeared to kick one of them in the head.It resulted in the former Manchester United player getting sent off before the match and, potentially, getting a very lengthy ban.

But why did he kick them?

His manager, Rudi Garcia, explained how he had been ‘insulted’ but insisted Evra shouldn’t have reacted.

"Pat has experience and he must not react, it's obvious," Garcia was quoted by L'Equipe as telling BeIN Sports.

"Patrice is a more than experienced player and we cannot respond to insults so low and so incredible because they come from one of our supporters."

On the fan, Garcia said: "He is not a supporter of OM, because you cannot insult your own players, you have to be behind everyone."

What Marseille fans were shouting

But what were those insults?

Well, according to French outlet L’Equipe, they were chanting two things at Evra.

“Get out of OM” and “Go back to your videos.”

Of course, the actual chants were probably far more explicit.

Evra is renowned for his hilarious Instagram videos with his catchphrase being: "I love this game."

It seems Marseille fans don't approve of them very much.

It was then that the defender confronted them and asked: “What do you want?”

The conversation then turned nasty before Evra decided to kick one of the supporters in the head.

Ouch.

It’s not quite known the extent of the ban Evra is likely to receive but the 36-year-old might not be playing for Marseille again.
