Kenwyne Jones' seventh goal of the season spared Sunderland boss Steve Bruce further misery as former club Wigan were denied victory following the 1-1 draw on Wearside.

The Trinidad and Tobago international headed home a 64th-minute equaliser as the Black Cats staged a second-half fightback after a woeful opening 45 minutes.

Mohamed Diame had given the visitors a deserved 20th-minute lead and Craig Gordon had to make a fine 58th-minute save to prevent James McCarthy from making it 2-0.
