Whether it be shaving the foam from a beer, or being the hero in the Ryder Cup, Ian Poulter is well-known for his antics on and off the fairways.

Now, Poulter is quite accustomed to the occasional prank, just this April he decided to surprise his Twitter followers.

He claimed he had earned an invitation to the Masters in Augusta and provided a series of tweets as proof.

A prank that fooled "98%" of his fans, including his dad, only for him to then remind everyone that the date was April 1.

Now, Poulter has been at it once again, this time with this England teammates.

As some of his fans may know, Poulter, along with his English contingent, managed to break a world record this week.

They succeeded in breaking the record for the quickest ever hole of golf, achieving a time of 32.70 seconds. But, one member of the team had been believing he had been trying to beat the record and earn himself some extra cash.

Matthew Southgate was under the impression that breaking the world record would land himself a £50k prize, an idea implanted into his head by Poulter and the rest of his teammates.

According to Mattthew Fitzpatrick, the man who was left to sink the record breaking hole was apparently biting very hard at the rumour of him earning himself a rather large pay cheque.

“Everyone was dying. The first thing Matt said was ‘does it go on the Order of Merit?’ Apparently he went up to a European Tour official and asked when do we get the 50 grand?"

However, Southgate denies this.

He insists that he played along with the joke, knowing that Poulter was trying to pull his leg and that he was mainly breaking the world record for pride rather than money.

When asked about the prank, Southgate said: "He [Poulter] tried to get us on a wind-up - he thinks I bit pretty hard but I didn't. It didn't take long for me to work out there wasn't any prize money, just all the glory.

"I had a little bite but it was more like a surprise 'Wow I didn't know about that' rather a 'Great I'm going to buy myself a new car'"

From what his teammates had to say about the incident, combined with the fact he didn’t comment on this until afterwards, shows he bit pretty hard.

A cracking effort to embarrass his compatriot, Poulter can now add Southgate to his prank target hit-list.
