The left back position has been problematic for Liverpool for some time now.

Since being signed from Sevilla in 2014, Alberto Moreno has proven time and time again that he can be a liability in defence.

James Milner plugged the gap last year, and performed admirably, but it was clear that he would not be a long term solution.

So when Andy Robertson was signed by Jurgen Klopp for £8 million in the summer, Liverpool fans thought they had finally resolved their woes at the left back position.

And Klopp emphasised that idea, as he spoke with great praise of the Scotsman after he had signed.

The German said: "When you speak to him it is clear why he makes his progress. He has a burning love for playing football - he really loves the game.

"His attitude is outstanding - absolutely outstanding. His talent and skills - also very, very good.

"He has experience of this competition, the Premier League, and he has the mentality and quality to get even better."

ROBERTSON HAS BEEN UNABLE TO HOLD DOWN A STARTING BERTH

Despite impressing when called upon this year, Robertson has featured sporadically for Liverpool this term.

In fact, he has only featured three times this season, and on many occasions has even failed to make the bench.

With his absence often going unexplained, Liverpool fans have been left confused as to why Klopp does not play the former Hull left back more often.

KLOPP FINALLY SPEAKS OUT

But Klopp has now answered why the 23-year-old has not featured as often as fans would have liked, claiming that he must improve if he wants first team opportunities.

When asked why Robertson does not start, the former Dortmund manager explained: "Because he has to learn, but there is no problem. We are in conversation, talk about it and he has to improve.

"He’s on a good way, a really good way. It’s going well apart from maybe he is not happy he cannot start so often as he would thought from the beginning.

"It’s all about improvement and then to be ready for the moment you are used."

KLOPP ALSO HINTS MORENO'S FORM IS KEEPING ROBERTSON OUT

Klopp was also very complimentary of Moreno's form, stating: "If they have the quality they can win the fans back because we have no real idea about the games four or five weeks away.

"We are easy to convince in the moment. He did it now consistently which is really nice.

"I am happy for him because he had a very difficult situation last year. That’s how it was. We spoke before the last season what we wanted him to do differently.

"He needed a bit of time and now he is doing well. Hopefully he can do well in the future again because that’s how you show consistency."
