Everything was going to plan at Manchester United earlier on in the season.

Jose Mourinho's men started their Premier League campaign in electrifying form, scoring 16 goals in their opening five games.

Their whole team was performing exquisitely. David De Gea was marshalling a strong defence, Paul Pogba was justifying his £90 million price tag, Henrikh Mkhitaryan looked a changed man from last year, and Romelu Lukaku was scoring goals for fun.

However, Man United's season stalled in October.

Manchester United's defence is still as strong as ever, but Paul Pogba sustained an injury, Mkhitaryan suffered a huge downturn in form and the goals dried up for Lukaku.

As a result, Man United have only been able to win once in their last four Premier League games, meaning they have fallen eight points behind Manchester City in the race for the title.

MOURINHO HAS A LACK OF FUNDS TO PLAY WITH

With Man United struggling in recent weeks, it is apparent they need to strengthen in order to catch Man City at the top of the table.

However, it was reported by the BBC last week, that Mourinho has been told he needs to sell in order to buy.

The Portuguese manager spent big in the summer, with Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic arriving for a combined fee of roughly £150 million.

As a result, Man United's coffers are all but empty, meaning Mourinho will have to be shrewd in the January transfer window if he is to add to his squad.

MOURINHO IDENTIFIES HIS MAIN JANUARY TARGET

Despite having very little money at his disposal, Mourinho has still identified his main transfer target.

After failing to sign Ivan Perisic in the summer, it is understood that the Man United boss is still keen on signing a winger.

And, according to The Independent, the Portuguese manager has identified Valencia’s Carlos Soler as his main transfer target.

The Spaniard only made his professional debut in December 2016, but since his debut he has played a major role in Valencia's resurgence.

His club are reluctant to sell their prized asset, but due to their own financial difficulties, it is understood that a bid of around £40 million will be enough to force Valencia's hand.

At just 20-years-old, Soler's lack of experience means the transfer may be a gamble, but his potential could make him a world-class player of the future.
