The Republic of Ireland’s evening couldn’t have started any better at the Aviva Stadium.
Defender Shane Duffy put the hosts ahead against Denmark in the sixth minute and qualification for next summer’s World Cup finals in Russia was suddenly within their grasp.
However, an own goal by Cyrus Christie on the half-hour mark levelled the scores and then Christian Eriksen took the game by the scruff of the neck.
The Tottenham playmaker scored his first goal of the night with a stunning goal from the edge of the box.
He then scored two second-half goals in the space of 10 minutes, sealing his hat-trick and ensuring Denmark will be in the draw for the 2018 World Cup group stage draw in the process.

What a performance.
Even Irish supporters on social media had to take their hats off and admit they’d been beaten by a top-class performance from a top-class player.
Gary Lineker summed it up nicely
However, it was former England striker Gary Lineker who summed it up nicely when he tweeted: “A hat-trick for the excellent Eriksen. One outstanding player the difference between the sides.”
That is so true.
Had Eriksen not been on the opposite team, Ireland would have stood a much better chance of winning the match and qualifying for next summer’s World Cup.
Eriksen deserves his place in Russia
Although it’s sad that the Irish won’t be in Russia next year, there’s no question that Eriksen deserves his place at the tournament.
