The Republic of Ireland surely fancied their chances of qualifying for next summer’s World Cup finals after drawing 0-0 with Denmark in Copenhagen on Saturday.
Martin O’Neill’s side had given themselves an excellent chance following that stalemate but even the most pessimistic Irishman couldn’t have predicted what would unfold at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Irish team and their passionate supporters were on cloud nine when Shane Duffy put them 1-0 up in the sixth minute. However, Cyrus Christie’s own goal on the half-hour mark changed the entire complexion of the match.
Minutes later and it was 2-1 to Denmark courtesy of a Christian Eriksen moment of magic.
The Tottenham star then added two more to his tally in the second half before Nicklas Bendtner compounded Ireland’s misery by netting a 90th-minute penalty. Five-one the final score in Dublin.
Liverpool fans had the same message for Roy Keane
While the goals were flying into Darren Randolph’s net - and after the final whistle, too - Liverpool fans all had the same message for Ireland’s assistant manager, Roy Keane, on Twitter.
In case you're wondering
Wondering what they’re all referring to?
Well, a couple of weeks ago, Keane angered the Liverpool faithful with comments he made about Jurgen Klopp’s side following their 3-0 win over Maribor in the Champions League.
"It's hard to figure out Liverpool at the moment," the former Manchester United captain told ITV Sport. "It's hard to get excited about them. To me, they are going nowhere fast.
"They're neat and tidy, but defensively... come the end of the season when the prizes are being given out, Liverpool will be nowhere near them.
"If Liverpool were playing out in my back garden, I wouldn't watch them. They're just drifting. Drifting nowhere."
As Liverpool’s fans have proved, revenge is truly a dish best served cold.
