What does Jose Mourinho see in Marouane Fellaini? No one really knows.
Once a laughing stock amongst Manchester United fans, the Belgian has become one of Jose Mourinho's so called 'important' players over the past 18 months.
For one reason or another, Mourinho adores the Belgian and back in September he made the surprise admission that he feels weaker without him.
"He's an important player for me - a lot more important than you can imagine," said the Portuguese following the 2-2 draw to Stoke City.
"I feel weaker without Fellaini in my squad, doesn't matter if it's on the pitch or on the bench. If his conditions are improved, he will be selected, I need him."
And just last month, Mourinho admitted he was concerned about the 29-year-old's future, given his contract expires next summer.
"I'm worried about Fellaini and not about Luke Shaw because Fellaini finishes his contract and Luke Shaw doesn't."
It's Fellaini's aerial presence and strength that has made him a favourite under Mourinho. When the Belgium international plays, he offers something completely different to his teammates.
But his proneness to mistakes and inconsistency remain a problem, which is why United fans won't be too sad to hear that he could leave for nothing next summer.
According to the Guardian, there's a good chance Fellaini will become a free agent after he rejected a contract renewal at Old Trafford.
And the reason he turned down a new deal? Because he wants a sizeable pay rise on his current £120,000-per-week wage packet. Wow.
Fellaini's salary rose to that figure from £80,000 in January when he signed a one-year extension and now he wants even more, despite making just eight appearances all season.
The cheek. If Mourinho was to agree to Fellaini's demands - which he probably won't - the Belgian would become one of United's top earners.
Just let that sink in for a minute - Marouane Fellaini earning more money than the likes of Nemanja Matic (£120k), Juan Mata (£140k) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£140k).
United fans will only hope Mourinho doesn't cave.
