Ever heard the story about the incident in the Old Trafford tunnel between Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Savage from 2006?

Neither had we until earlier this year, when Ferdinand threatened to get Manchester United to release CCTV footage of the incident.

The only footage that exists of the fracas, which happened at half-time in a Premier League clash between United and Blackburn Rovers, is of Savage chasing Ferdinand into the tunnel after the England defender said something to him seconds earlier.

We still don’t know what was said or what happened in the tunnel but it’s safe to assume that Savage came off worse, regardless of what he might want people to believe.

The incident was brought up again on BT Sport following the Red Devils’ 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

The 2006 tunnel incident was brought up again

Following an ad break, BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey said: “Robbie’s not been knocked out by Rio you’ll be pleased to know in that break.”

Ferdinand, who recently announced that he’s in training to box professionally, then said: “We’ve got time” before pointing to the Old Trafford tunnel and saying to Savage: “Remember that time…”

Savage quickly jumped in and shouted: “I battered him in the tunnel!”

Humphrey then asked: “What *did* happen in the tunnel?”

Ferdinand, pointing towards Savage, added: “His heart rate has gone up now, look at him!”

The moment Rio mugged off Robbie on live TV

The two then jokingly argued about which of them won their scrap in the tunnel before Ferdinand held out his hand for Savage to high-five.

Savage took the bait but was mugged off by an old school prank from Ferdinand, who pulled away his hand and shouted “wheeeeey!”

Savage burst out laughing and put his arms on Jenas next to him. The former Tottenham midfielder, with his head in his hands, said: “That is low!”

It’s great to see that schoolboy pranks still have their place in society.
