Chelsea youngster Fankaty Dabo lived his worst nightmare on Sunday during Groningen's 4-2 win over Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie.

The 22-year-old right-back is one of four Chelsea players currently on loan at Vitesse - and one of 34 currently plying his trade away from Stamford Bridge.

Dabo joined the west London club in 2007 and has represented England's youth team at three different ages.

He spent the latter part of the 2016/17 campaign on loan at Swindon Town and is continuing his development in the Netherlands this season.

Dabo has started every Eredivisie game so far this season but had an absolute shocker in Sunday's 4-2 defeat.

Dabo's incredible 50 yard own goal

Under pressure from a Groningen player, the Chelsea loanee decided to try and keep possession on the touchline by sending the ball back to his goalkeeper in the 59th minute.

Dabo's pass was overhit and the ball sailed over 21-year-old debutant Jeroen Houwen in the Vitesse goal.

It must be noted that some of the blame has to go on the young goalkeeper, making his first appearance in the Dutch top division.

Groningen went on to score three times in the final 25 minutes to win the game 4-2.

The Chelsea talent farm

Chelsea have one of the most remarkable loan systems in the world but their inability to integrate their young talent into the first team has cost them dearly in recent years.

Premier League stars Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne were allowed to leave for just a fraction of the current value.

The Belgian duo now star for Manchester United and Manchester City respectively, and are probably worth far more than £200m combined.
