Bournemouth substitute Alan Connell popped up with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw to keep his side's promotion hopes on track and deny Macclesfield their first win of 2010.

Connell drilled home five minutes from time after Macclesfield goalkeeper Jon Brain appeared to be have been impeded as he tried to claim Lee Bradbury's cross, and Silkmen boss Keith Alexander was sent to the stands in the resulting protests.

Chances were few and far between in a drab and scrappy first half but Bournemouth should have taken the lead when Jason Pearce headed the ball back across goal for Brett Pitman to volley over from 10 yards.

But Macclesfield came with a game plan to frustrate the Cherries and it looked to have worked when they look the lead against the run of play as defender Nat Brown leapt to powerfully headed home Lee Bell's free-kick after 62 minutes.

Bournemouth were certainly worth a point after dominating the second half and Connell was guilty of spurning a couple of chances before his late leveller.
