Sheffield United defender Derek Geary is likely to miss the rest of the season after discovering he will be out for three months with an ankle injury.
The full-back, who returned to action earlier in the season following over a year out with a knee problem, sustained the injury in the defeat to Nottingham Forest last week and scans have revealed the full extent of the damage.
Blades boss Kevin Blackwell told the club's official website: "It is a savage blow for Derek because it looks as though it will be three months before he has recovered so that is virtually the season over for him."
Blackwell added: "Having spent so long getting back from a knee injury so serious that most people would have given up on it, fight back to make the first team and then get this is desperately unlucky for him, particularly as he is out of contact in the summer."
