Hill fury at rugby dilemma

Keith Hill guided his table-topping Rochdale side to a 1-0 win at Macclesfield and then hit out as the opening of the domestic rugby league season threatens to hamper the club`s promotion charge back at Spotland.

Chris O`Grady grabbed the only goal of the game at the Moss Rose to send Dale five points clear at the summit, but afterwards Hill turned his thoughts back to home soil as ground-sharing neighbours Rochdale Hornets Rugby League team kickstart their league campaign on Sunday.

"We're absolutely dismayed they're playing rugby on the pitch," he said.

"Only one or two hundred people will come down (on Sunday), but it's producing a pitch that's conducive only for rugby and not for the type of football we want to play.

"Everybody in the town should be behind our promotion drive, but on Tuesday night we'll face a dreadful pitch on which we can't play the type of football we want to.

"The players are very disappointed about it and so am I."
