Caretaker Macclesfield manager Gary Simpson dedicated his side's 2-0 win over Hereford to his long-standing friend and boss Keith Alexander, who passed away in midweek.

A minute's silence was held before the kick-off in a tribute to Alexander when the Silkmen players wore special shirts with 'Rest in peace, gaffer' printed on the back. Goals in each half from Ricky Sappleton and Emile Sinclair gave Macclesfield the victory.

Simpson said: "I had known Keith for 30 years and I hope he was looking down upon us. He was a tremendous man and will be sorely missed. We have a good set of lads here, some of whom have been with him a long time, and a lot are young lads he brought in this season."

He added: "I thought our supporters were also fantastic and I am just as pleased for them as they have come here to celebrate Keith's life and also the three points as well."
