Sunderland's Darren Bent served up a priceless hat-trick for watching owner Ellis Short as their 4-0 win over Bolton finally ended their wait for a Barclays Premier League victory at the 15th attempt.

Fraizer Campbell had got the home side off to a dream start, scoring after just 44 seconds, but it was Bent who completed the job as the Black Cats dragged themselves six points clear of the drop zone into 13th place.

He took his tally for the season to 17 with a calm 64th-minute finish from Lee Cattermole's pass, converted a penalty 10 minutes later after being fouled by Bolton defender Sam Ricketts, who was sent off for his second bookable offence, and added a third two minutes from time.
