Wayne Rooney may be a boyhood Evertonian, but his status as a Manchester United legend is well and truly assured.

The former Red Devils captain scored 253 goals in 559 matches over a 13-year period to become the club's all-time top scorer - a feat which he also replicated for England.

If that wasn't enough, Rooney also won 16 trophies during his time at Old Trafford and even made it into the FIFPro World XI on one occasion.

He produced plenty of magical moments against United's neighbours, most notably that stunning overhead kick winner, but the current Manchester City side are running away with the title.

Despite City's incredible form so far this season, Rooney thinks there is one Man Utd team he was a key part of that is better than Pep Guardiola's Premier League leaders.

Man City marching to title

Saturday's 4-1 thumping of Tottenham was Man City's 16th consecutive league win, and their only dropped points of the campaign came courtesy of a trademark Rooney goal at the Etihad.

People have been comparing City to Arsenal's Invincibles, however Rooney believes there was a star-studded Man United outfit that was ahead of Pep's unbeaten high-flyers.

Rooney: The Man Utd team that was better

When asked for his opinion on the greatest ever Premier League team, the Everton striker told talkSPORT, via The Mirror: "There have been so many great teams in the Premier League.

"I'm not sure (Man) City are quite there. They need to win trophies and to do it for a longer period to be in that bracket."

Rooney, who finds himself behind only Alan Shearer in the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts, continued: "The best ever? I would go with the Man United team from 2008."

Is Rooney right?

As good as City look at the moment, Rooney does have a point when he says that they haven't won anything yet, and the same can't be said about Man Utd's 2008 side.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United won both the Premier League and the Champions League in 2007-08, with Rooney, Carlos Tevez and 42-goal Cristiano Ronaldo starring.

Rooney also questions whether or not Man Utd's noisy neighbours will go the entire league season unbeaten, since there are now "many top teams", compared to just one or two.
