In case you were asleep at around 2am, Billy Joe Saunders produced a true boxing masterclass in Montreal, defeating David Lemieux with relative ease in his own backyard.

Boxing fans have hailed the performance as arguably the best of Saunders' career and now, he has his eye on the winner of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin in their much-anticipated rematch.

Given the skills he showed in Canada, you wouldn't put it past him claiming what would be one of the biggest victories in the history of British boxing.

One of those who made the trip to Montreal to back Saunders was his long time friend, Tyson Fury.

The Gypsy King is targeting a sensational comeback to the ring in 2018 and his reaction to his buddy's performance was so very typical.

He praised him to the rafters and he simply had to have a shot at one man; Anthony Joshua.

FURY ON FORM POST-FIGHT

Speaking after the fight, Fury said: “It becomes a one-sided fight. That there is just a re-run of how me and Joshua will go. He’ll be swinging on all night and not landing anything and that’s how the fight will go. So if you want to know how to beat AJ just watch Billy Joe Saunders.”

Then, Fury added that we have not yet seen the very best of Saunders in the ring.

“That wasn’t the best Billy Joe Saunders by no shadow of imagination. He’s got more gears, more to come. If he keeps training over the Christmas and maybe get another fight in before May, he’s going to go into that fight (Golovkin or Canelo) on form.”

If Fury were able to replicate Saunders' level of performance against AJ, he may stand a chance of making his prediction come true.

However, there are still lingering doubts as to whether he can overcome the 2012 Olympic champion.

The only certain thing is that if they do meet in the ring, Britain will come to a stand-still.
