Newcastle boss Chris Hughton will make a late decision on defender Fabricio Coloccini ahead of the clash with Scunthorpe.

The Argentina international suffered a dead leg in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough but has a chance of playing.

Full-back Danny Simpson has recovered from the knock he picked up at the Riverside Stadium but central defender Mike Williamson will be out for up to a month after breaking a bone in his hand while exercising at home.

Alan Smith (ankle) will not be risked and could instead come into contention for Saturday's trip to Bristol City, while Steven Taylor (knee) and Shola Ameobi (hamstring) remain on the sidelines, although Ameobi is expected to return to training on Thursday.

Midfielder Joey Barton is due to continue his comeback after foot surgery with an appearance for the reserves at Hartlepool.

Leading goalscorer Gary Hooper is doubtful for Scunthorpe.

The striker missed the 1-0 defeat against Ipswich with a groin injury he has been carrying for some time and the indications are he is unlikely to travel, although he should be okay for Saturday`s crucial home test against fellow strugglers Plymouth.

Captain Cliff Byrne will miss out against the Magpies as he starts a five-match ban having been sent off for the third time this season at Portman Road.

However, midfielder Michael O`Connor returns from a three-game suspension and is contention for a place in the squad.

Rob Jones, Andrew Wright and Kenny Milne all made the bench against Ipswich after injury, while goalkeeper Joe Murphy shrugged off a wrist problem to continue between the sticks.

Ian Morris remains around five weeks away from a return as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.
