Pace is everything in the modern game.

Look at the Premier League and you’ll see just that.

Manchester City lead the way in terms of goals having scored 56 in 18 matches with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus causing havoc for defences with their blistering pace.

Then there’s Manchester United’s attack - consisting of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku - and Liverpool’s - with the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Of course, you need have the quality to succeed at the top level but having blistering pace certainly helps.

But who are the quickest players in the league?

Well, luckily for us, Opta have compiled a list of the 20 players that have clocked up the fastest speeds during the 2017/18 season so far.

While the player at number one isn’t particularly surprising, there are some shocks in the list - and there’s also some very fast players that have failed to make the top 20.

THE QUICKEST PLAYERS IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Here it is:

20 Ryan Fraser – Bournemouth (34.79 km/h)

19 DeAndre Yedlin – Newcastle (34.81 km/h)

18 Jose Izquierdo – Brighton (34.83 km/h)

17 Jordon Ibe – Bournemouth (34.83 km/h)

16 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – Liverpool (34.83 km/h)

15 Sadio Mane – Liverpool (34.84 km/h)

14 Raheem Sterling – Manchester City (34.84 km/h)

13 Kurt Zouma – Stoke (34.94 km/h)

12 Joshua King – Bournemouth (34.94 km/h)

11 Hector Bellerin – Arsenal (34.99 km/h)

10 Jamie Vardy – Leicester (35.09 km/h)

9 Laurent Koscielny – Arsenal (35.11 km/h)

8 Kiko Femenia – Watford (35.12 km/h)

7 Oliver Burke – West Brom (35.13 km/h)

6 Wilfried Zaha – Crystal Palace (35.14 km/h)

5 Antonio Rudiger – Chelsea (35.19 km/h)

4 Kyle Walker – Manchester City (35.21 km/h)

3 Moussa Sissoko – Tottenham Hotspur (35.33 km/h)

2 Patrick van Aanholt – Crystal Palace (35.42 km/h)

1 Leroy Sane – Manchester City (35.48 km/h)

That’s right, it’s City’s Sane that has reached a top speed of 35.48 km/h during the Premier League this season.

He clocked that speed during their 1-0 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in October. In fact, it’s the quickest speed to have been registered since records began, beating the previous best of 35.44 km/h set by Vardy back in 2015.

And here is that moment:

While Sane will take some catching when he’s running full pelt, so will his side as they’ve established an 11-point lead at the top of the table. Seventeen wins from their 18 matches have already seen them put one hand on the Premier League trophy before the New Year.
