Relegation-threatened Southend overcame a two-goal deficit and having skipper Adam Barrett sent off to earn a point at home to Carlisle.

The Cumbrians were 2-0 up inside 13 minutes thanks to Scott Dobie and Ben Marshall.

Evan Horwood crossed from the left for Dobie to head low into the bottom right of the Blues goal beyond Steve Mildenhall's dive after only six minutes.

Horwood set up the second seven minutes later with a ball into the box which Southend's defence did not clear, letting Marshall nip in to head past Mildenhall from close range.

Blues reduced the deficit in the 25th minute when a neat one-two by Damian Scannell and Simon Francis allowed the former to cut inside and tee up Franck Moussa to score low into the right corner of the goal from 18 yards.

The Belgian midfielder hit the post with another effort before Southend equalised in the 28th minute when Barrett headed home from a Simon Francis corner from the left.

Southend were reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute when Barrett was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Peter Murphy.
