Goals in each half from Liam Davis and Ryan Gilligan maintained Northampton's promotion push with a 2-0 win against fellow play-off chasers Morecambe.

Billy McKay tested Barry Roche in the first minute and a minute later Davis gave Cobblers the lead with a low drive from the edge of the box.

Northampton had chances to increase their lead, with Roche twice foiling Adebayo Akinfenwa, but Morecambe gradually got into the game and had chances to equalise with Emmanuel Panther firing over and Paul Mullin lifting the ball over the crossbar from close range.

The hosts took control at the start of the second half when Gilligan doubled their advantage six minutes after the restart, beating Roche from close range after racing on to Akinfenwa's neat lay-off.

Davis and McKay then both went close as Northampton continued to dominate against a Morecambe side that offered little.

Substitute Wayne Curtis should have reduced the arrears in the 75th minute but failed to connect with Simon Hackney's cross while Cobblers keeper Jason Steele saved well from Stewart Drummond late on.
