Patrick Mahomes will finally get his shot at becoming the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday.

Head coach Andy Reid announced earlier today (Wed. December 27, 2017) in a press conference that Mahomes will be starting the team's regular season finale against the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs are locked in at the No. 4-seed position in the AFC after winning the AFC West.

Mahomes was the Chiefs' first round pick in the 2017 Draft and will get the opportunity to show fans what the future looks like once he takes the helm after Smith is done (quotes via NFL.com):

"It's not going to hurt him for sure. He will learn from it," Reid said of the rookie, via ArrowheadPride.com. "Every snap that he gets is a valuable snap for him whenever he has that chance of getting in there."

Reid also said that Mahomes will get first team reps this week in practice while Alex Smith leads the scout team. Reid's plan for Sunday is to rest key starters and give his young players reps in a real game situation:

"Fortunately we have a quarterback who understands it," Reid said of Smith, per the Kansas City Star. "He's having an MVP caliber year."

The Chiefs' season hasn't been all good, however, as they struggled mid-season on offense and fans began calling for Mahomes to takeover the offense then. Smith stepped up his play greatly and those outcries began to die down.

Mahomes is an extremely talented young quarterback who showed off an excellent skillset during his appearances in the pre season. It should be interesting to see what would happen if Mahomes puts on an otherworldly performance this Sunday in Denver.

If the young quarterback shows extreme promise it would be difficult not to try him out under center with a Super Bowl title within Kansas City's grasp.

What are your thoughts on Mahomes starting for the Chiefs this Sunday? Do you think that there's any chance Mahomes could steal the starting job from Smith right before the playoffs? Or will Smith still be the leading man for Kansas City in the playoffs regardless of Mahomes' performance? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below!
