Sheffield Wednesday skipper Darren Purse is doubtful for the home game with Watford but striker Luke Varney is available again.

Purse is struggling with the hamstring strain that forced him out of the goalless draw with Derby at the weekend and could undergo a late fitness test.

Richard Hinds replaced Purse on Saturday and is likely to continue if Wednesday's captain fails to make it.

Varney, on loan from Derby, missed out against his parent club but returns to give manager Alan Irvine, who started with Marcus Tudgay and Leon Clarke last weekend, further options up front.

Winger Jermaine Johnson missed out against Derby and is still nursing a hamstring problem, so Etienne Esajas could return to the starting line-up.

Irvine's side, who have drawn their last three league games, will leapfrog relegation rivals Watford in the bottom six if they win.

Watford go into the game with doubts over the fitness of Jay DeMerit and Henri Lansbury.

Skipper DeMerit missed Sunday's defeat at Cardiff with a back injury and Arsenal loanee Lansbury is struggling with a hip problem, with both players set to be assessed prior to kick-off.

Adrian Mariappa was shifted from right-back to the centre of defence at the weekend in place of DeMerit, with Lee Hodson recalled to the back four.

Ross Jenkins will be on standby to start in midfield if Lansbury is ruled out.

Will Buckley, the January signing from Rochdale, made his belated debut as a substitute in Cardiff after a thigh injury and should be involved again.

The Hornets are looking to end a winless run on the road stretching back to October.
