Cardiff duo Joe Ledley and Kelvin Etuhu are closing in on comebacks although neither will feature against Sheffield United.
Ledley has been cleared to return to training after undergoing two hip operations in January and could be back in action within three weeks.
Loan star Etuhu is also on the mend following a spell on the sidelines with ankle problems, but he is also set to miss the clash with the Blades.
Defenders Kevin McNaughton and Anthony Gerrard are sidelined with thigh and calf injuries respectively, but are set to return to training within the next week.
Meanwhile full-back Mark Kennedy is a doubt for the game with a rib injury, although the club are awaiting the results of an X-ray before making a decision.
United will be without injured striker Henri Camara for the trip to Wales.
Camara sustained a groin injury in the weekend draw at Doncaster and his absence gives manager Kevin Blackwell another selection headache.
The Blades are already without fellow forwards Jamie Ward, Darius Henderson (both hamstring) and Ched Evans (collarbone) and Blackwell is fast running out of partners for Richard Cresswell.
Skipper Chris Morgan has served his two-match ban, but Blackwell is still without midfielder Lee Williamson (hamstring), on-loan Fulham full-back Toni Kallio (calf) and long-term absentees Gary Naysmith, Ryan France (both knee) and Derek Geary (ankle).
Blackwell was forced to field five on-loan players last Saturday at Doncaster and the latest to arrive, goalkeeper Steve Simonsen, will start his second match following the return to Blackburn of Mark Bunn.
