Malky Mackay was furious with referee Darren Deadman after he missed what the Watford boss felt was a clear foul on Tom Cleverley in the build up to Sheffield Wednesday's winner.
Cleverley, who had cancelled out Eddie Nolan's opener, was down on the ground after a challenge from Darren Potter but Deadman allowed play to continue and Luke Varney went onto score a minute from time to secure a 2-1 win for the Owls.
"You see the reaction of the players. I can't believe it," said a fuming Mackay. "When I get an apology from the referee saying 'I am sorry I missed it', it is unacceptable. I have seen it on the DVD and it is blatant. For the referee not to give that is unacceptable."
Despite the defeat, which leaves his side teetering above the drop zone and with just one win in their last eight games, Mackay is confident his side will achieve safety.
He added: "I know we are down there with seven or eight teams and we have to make sure we pick up as many points as we can. We're definitely confident we can stay in the division."
