On Saturday afternoon, it was confirmed by various sources that Philippe Coutinho would finally fly to Barcelona to complete an £142m transfer. The Liverpool midfielder was not included in Jurgen Klopp's squad for the FA Cup clash with Everton on Friday night, having missed the previous two Premier League fixtures.Liverpool paid £8.5m to sign him as a 20-year-old in 2013 and he went on to score 54 goals in 201 appearances for the Reds. The £142m deal is set to conclude a long-running transfer saga involving Barcelona and Coutinho. The Catalan giants made three bids for the 25-year-old Brazilian in the summer - but Liverpool refused to sell their prized asset, despite Coutinho handing in a transfer request."I'm not surprised that any clubs are interested in players at Liverpool," Klopp said in July. "A few people obviously see that Liverpool has a few good players.

"But it's a very important message to make - we are not a selling club. That's how it is."

Klopp was far less adamant in recent weeks, refusing to discuss speculation surrounding Coutinho's future.

Gary Lineker's tweet

The Match of the Day host immediately reacted to news of the £142m agreement between Liverpool and Barcelona on Twitter.

Lineker joked that it was outrageous that a footballer in his prime would want to leave Merseyside for Barcelona.

Not in the best of moods, Liverpool fans on social media did not appreciate what they thought was a little dig at their club (and their city).

One Liverpool fan wisely pointed out that Lineker wasn't taking a dig at Liverpool - the 57-year-old former England striker famously left Everton for Barcelona at the age of 26.

The retired Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham striker just can't help himself.

Liverpool are reportedly set to receive £105m up front from the La Liga leaders, with the rest to come in performance-related add-ons.

Coutinho will be ineligible to play in the Champions League knockout rounds but could conceivably make his debut in Thursday night's Copa del Rey fixture against Celta Vigo.
