Philippe Coutinho is officially a Barcelona player after completing his £142 million move.Despite claiming he wasn’t for sale at any price in the summer, Liverpool have caved in and allowed Coutinho to realise his dream and join the Camp Nou club.Questions will be asked why Liverpool couldn’t agree a deal for the summer - much like they’ve done themselves with Naby Keita - but Coutinho simply didn’t want to wait, it seems. What the Reds need to do now is spend that £142 million wisely. It’s something they’ve failed to do in the past after wasting the fees they received for Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling. But fans will be satisfied with the money they’ve received for a player that failed to win any trophies during his time on Merseyside. However, Barcelona sporting director, Jordi Mestre, has made a rather bizarre claim about Coutinho’s fee.He claims that a deal was agreed because there was “a big reduction" from the negotiations in the summer. We’ll let him try to explain…

WHAT BARCA'S SPORTING DIRECTOR HAS SAID

"The interest of the club has always been to sign Coutinho," Mestre said at Coutinho’s press conference.

"The difference with the summer is that there has been a big reduction in the price.

"By desire of Liverpool, we cannot give the figures, but there has been a very important reduction.

"If I said something, it would be to break the pact we have with Liverpool.

"It's bad for me but we cannot give any figures."

Is this a ploy to please those Barca fans that were worried about the transfer fee?

LIVERPOOL FANS REACT

That’s exactly what Liverpool fans are thinking anyway. They’ve reacted on Twitter to Mestre’s claims, calling him a liar.

Check out the reaction:

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time the Catalan club have lied during the Coutinho saga.

Leaked emails in the summer show that Liverpool didn’t quote £183 million like Barcelona claimed with them, instead, insisting Coutinho was "not for sale at any price".

Maybe that's why they're claming they've signed Coutinho at a reduced price - because they still believe Liverpool quoted them £183 million in the summer.
