Monday 8 January was dubbed #CoutinhoDay by Barcelona as they unveiled their new signing - Philippe Coutinho.Coutinho made the £142 million move from Liverpool and was shown off to the Barca supporters after becoming the second-most expensive player in history - well, until Kylian Mbappe makes his move to Paris Saint-Germain next summer. While Blaugrana are delighted to finally get their man, spare a thought for Liverpool. They will now have to survive the rest of the season without their star player as they look to finish in the top-four and reach the latter stages of the Champions League and FA Cup.The Reds are currently 17 matches unbeaten after beating Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup last Friday. However, the mood of the supporters has taken a massive dip after the sale of the Brazilian. While they understand his desire to move to Barca, they don’t like the way in which he’s forced the move. However, Steven Gerrard showed absolutely no animosity towards his former teammate when he was asked about him on BT Sport.Gerrard was a pundit for Brighton’s FA Cup clash against Crystal Palace but, before they could focus on the upcoming tie, he was asked about Coutinho’s move.

WHAT GERRARD SAID ABOUT COUTINHO'S MOVE

And his reaction was very classy indeed.

“I’m still digesting it as a Liverpool fan,” Gerrard admitted when asked about Coutinho’s departure.

“Still being sick,” Rio Ferdinand piped up.

“Yeah,” Gerrard replied.

“I’m not surprised (it’s happened in January). I know Liverpool did everything they can to keep him and they fought very hard to keep him until the summer.

“You know, when a kids got a dream, a South American and he wants to play for Barcelona and he thinks this is the only opportunity he’s going to get, it’s very difficult to stop it.

“But there’s no doubt about it Liverpool will miss him. He’s a wonderful footballer, a great person and - to be fair to him - he hasn’t downed tools at all so I respect his decision. I wish him all the best but Liverpool will go on, they got big money for him and I’m sure they’ll replace him with the right people.”

Well said, Stevie.

Of course, Gerrard saw this transfer coming years ago.

WHAT GERRARD ABOUT COUTINHO IN 2015

In his 2015 autobiography, Gerrard was well aware that the likes of Real Madrid and Barca could come calling for Coutinho soon enough.

But I also know that the Spanish giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid, will come looking for Philippe in a few more seasons, just like they did with Luis,” Gerrard wrote.

"And that's when it will get tricky for Liverpool because the lure to go to one or two of those clubs is so strong for any South American or Spanish player."
