Steven Gerrard summed up the feelings of every Liverpool supporter when the topic of Philippe Coutinho’s move to Barcelona was raised on BT Sport last night.

“I’m still digesting it, as a Liverpool fans,” Gerrard said, before Rio Ferdinand interjected to ask him if he was still feeling sick.

“Yeah,” came Gerrard’s exasperated response.

Gerrard, who played with Coutinho at Anfield, knows just how significant the Brazilian’s departure is.

Mohamed Salah’s incredible start to his Liverpool career, as well as the presence of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, has convinced many supporters that the Reds will be just fine without Coutinho.

But those are optimistic thoughts. Coutinho is a phenomenal player and Liverpool’s squad is instantly weaker without him.

It’s disappointing for Liverpool, who had hoped to convince the playmaker to stay at the club, but one silver lining can be found in how early in the transfer window the deal was completed.

There’s plenty of time left in the month for Klopp to bring in a suitable replacement, his options increased due to Coutinho’s £142 million fee.

The search is already underway, with Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez touted as potential incomings.

Gerrard's Instagram message to Coutinho

Gerrard revealed his thoughts on Coutinho’s transfer on BT Sport last night and he’s now sent his former teammate a lovely farewell message on Instagram.

The former Liverpool captain considers Coutinho one of the best players he’s ever played with.

Accompanied by a picture of the two together, Gerrard wrote: “It hurts you have left because you are a special player, up there with the best I shared a pitch with.

“I want to wish you @phil.coutinho and your family all the best for the next stage of your career in Barcelona. Thank you for the special moments and memories over the last 5 years. YNWA”.

Kind words from Gerrard. Coutinho isn’t the most popular figure among Liverpool supporters right now but Gerrard still remembers everything he did for the club.

Lovren also sent a message

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren also wished Coutinho well on Instagram.

“My brazilian brate, it was a pleasure and honour to share the dressing room with you,” Lovren wrote.

“You are a amazing player and even better person! Wish you all the best in your new club, we will miss you a lot. ☹️ ❤️

“Don’t forget You will never walk alone 😘 @phil.coutinho”.

Clearly, the Brazil international will be missed.
