Coutinho's farewell Instagram post

Liverpool fans loved their Brazilian magician - but plenty have been none too impressed by his behaviour over the last six months.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request over the summer transfer window and Liverpool - set to play in the Champions League last 16 - were undoubtedly desperate to keep him until the end of the season.

Barcelona's new man posted a heartfelt farewell letter on Instagram for the Liverpool supporters.

Bitter Liverpool fans react

Some Reds supporters liked Coutinho's farewell message but there were plenty who were not so appreciative of the perfectly written social media post.

Lots of fans noted that Coutinho never managed to fully grasp the English language during his five-year stay in Merseyside.

It may be some PR fluff but it's quite possible that he just called upon a translator. That does not suit the narrative of these fans however.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke of his reluctance to allow Coutinho to leave.

“It is with great reluctance that we – as a team and club – prepare to say farewell to a good friend, a wonderful person and a fantastic player in Philippe Coutinho," said the German boss in a Liverpool club statement.

“It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known.

“Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his teammates this was a move he was desperate to make happen.

“Philippe has made a fantastic contribution to this club over his five years of service and as disappointed as we are he doesn’t want to extend that, the relationship we have for him means with a heavy heart we wish him well."
