Early last year Danny Garcia's undefeated streak in the world of boxing came to an end.
Garcia attempted to defend his WBC welterweight title, and capture Keith Thurman's WBA (Super) welterweight title. The bout took place on March 4th of last year from the Barclays Center in New York City.
After 12 rounds of fighting Thurman won a split decision that continued his undefeated record, ended Garcia's, and gave him the WBC welterweight title. Garcia believes that he did enough to win the fight and was robbed by the judges.
Garcia would love the opportunity to rematch Thurman for the welterweight titles, but doesn't believe that his adversary is open to the same.
In a recent interview with Boxing Scene, Garcia stated that he believes deep in Thurman's heart - he doesn't want to rematch him (quotes via Boxing Scene):
“I don’t think he does [want a rematch], in his heart,” Garcia told BoxingScene.com on Tuesday.
“It’s just one of those things like you go in somebody’s backyard and you steal something, and you never come back. He ain’t never coming back. But only time will tell.”
Garcia was then asked about his initial fight with Thurman and how he believes he did enough to get the nod on the scorecards. He won't linger on it too much, however, as he is focused on Brandon Rios next month in New York:
“I thought I did enough to win the fight, especially in the championship rounds,” Garcia said. “I closed it off strong.
"One judge gave me the last two rounds and that was the [reason] for the [split] decision. But it is what it is. That’s in the past and 2018 is the future. I’m coming back strong.
“I can’t worry about [the Thurman rematch] right now. I’ve got a desperate fighter who’s got something to prove in front of me.
"I’ve gotta lock in and I can’t worry about none of that stuff. I know all that stuff will come in the future.”
