Arsenal travelled to Chelsea for their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg against Chelsea in somewhat of an injury crisis. The likes of Mesut Ozil, Laurent Koscielny, Saed Kolasinac, Nacho Monreal, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud were all sidelined leaving Arsene Wenger a selection headache. And yet the Frenchman still managed to spring a surprise in his starting XI.Alexis Sanchez was left on the bench at Stamford Bridge - much like he was in the league clash earlier in the season - and Alex Iwobi was picked ahead of him.Much of Arsenal’s build-up to the match involved Iwobi after the winger was caught partying into the early hours of Saturday morning - less than 48 hours before the Gunners were dumped out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest. The 21-year-old is set to be fined after a video - which was allegedly filmed at 2:37am - emerged of him dancing in a flat in Soho the day before their third-round tie.

Wenger was hoping that Iwobi would be desperate to make amends with his performance but failed to do so during the 0-0 draw with Chelsea. In fact, he was so underwhelming that Arsenal fans jokingly sang: “You should have stayed at the party,” at him during the second-half.

IAN WRIGHT ON IWOBI STARTING

And club legend Ian Wright has reacted to Wenger’s decision to start Iwobi.

He was speaking on Sky Sports’ ‘The Debate’ and said it was a “joke” that the Nigerian was named in the starting XI.

“In the current climate, for a young player to go out and do that with Arsenal going through what they’re going through now — experienced players wanting to leave, there’s no leadership — Arsene Wenger should have made a better stance on this,” Wright said.

“A stronger stance. Because Arsenal have got to find what we are losing at the moment. People laugh at us — they see it as a bit of a joke with what’s going on at the moment — players don’t want to be there. It just feels like we are losing control.

“What’s it saying to Theo?,” he added. “He’s got a youngster that’s gone out less than 48 hours before the game, still plays in that game, plays in this game and you can’t get a game in front of him.

“You’ve got to start thinking about your own future.”

ARSENAL FANS AGREE

And it's something that Arsenal fans completely agree with. Check out the reaction on Twitter:

While Iwobi wasn’t particularly impressive, Arsenal fans will be pleased to have earned themselves a draw ahead of the second-leg at the Emirates in two weeks time.

Having crashed out of the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup now represents the most obvious chance of silverware this season and Wenger will no doubt be desperate to make it to Wembley.
