It’s now 22 years since Euro ’96 and some of you reading this hadn’t even been born when the tournament kicked off at Wembley. But for those of us English fans who are old enough to remember, we’ll always have fond memories of the tournament - despite the fact that it ended in inevitable heartbreak. The Three Lions began the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland before beating rivals Scotland 2-0 thanks to goals from Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne.Gazza’s goal, in particular, would never be forgotten. It’s one of the best and most iconic goals in the history of the England national team. The mercurial midfielder, who is widely regarded as one of the most gifted English footballers of all time, brilliantly flicked the ball over Scotland centre-back Colin Hendry with his left foot before volleying into the bottom corner with his right. It was a moment of magic from a player who has suffered terribly since hanging up his boots in the early 2000s.

Gazza, now 50, has returned to Twitter in recent days following a lengthy absence and it’s brilliant to see him looking healthy again.

Despite everything he’s been through over recent years, the cheeky Georgie hasn’t lost his wicked sense of humour.

Gazza destroys Hendry with brilliant tweet

One of his first tweets was directed towards the aforementioned Hendry, who Gazza couldn’t resist mocking.

“I seen Colin Hendry in London once and asked him what he was doing there,he me asked why . Cus I thought I left you at Wembley x,” Gascoigne tweeted.

Burn.

Needless to say, Gazza’s followers loved his tweet…

Hendry responds with classy tweet

Hendry then responded with a very dignified tweet.

“I’ve told you many times Paul ... it’s taken England’s greatest ever footballer to “ do” me❤️oh and.......#ivegotsummityouaintgot #premiership😉 #muchloveGazza.xx”

Class!

Hendry was, of course, referring to the Premier League winners’ medal he received for helping Blackburn Rovers win the title in 1995.

Although Gazza won several titles during his illustrious career - including two leagues with Rangers and the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1991 - he never managed to become a league champion in England.
