It's fair to say Liverpool didn't spend the Luis Suarez money very well after the Uruguayan striker departed for Barcelona in 2014.

The red half of Merseyside raked in £75 million for Suarez and went on to spend £115 million on nine players to replace him.

Among those players was Emre Can, a then-little-known German youngster with truckloads of potential.

Liverpool splashed £10.5 million on the then-teenager to prize him away from Bayer Leverkusen and he has gone on to become a vital member of the midfield at Anfield.

However, his contract has been allowed to run down and now, after three-and-a-half years at the club, the 23-year-old is eligible to negotiate with foreign sides ahead of a free transfer in the summer.

Can has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus for months now and many expect an announcement to be made during the January transfer window.

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, though, Can has finally talked about his expiring deal and what he is focused on right now.

Although sources close to Can insist he is yet to make his mind up on the move to Italy, Can himself says he really wants to win something with Liverpool.

“First of all there are still many games with Liverpool to concentrate on, but I hope to be able to stay healthy and go to the World Cup in the summer,” Can said.

“We have been in a good way and we want to try to continue winning as many games as possible and hopefully that can mean having a good run in the FA Cup as well as the Premier League and the Champions League.

“We want to win a trophy. We are full of belief that winning a title is something this squad is capable of achieving and we will give our best.”

Liverpool fans will be encouraged that Can has plenty of unfinished business with the club to take care of, but Sami Khedira's comments - his German teammate and prospective German teammate - will do the opposite.

“I know Emre very well,” Khedira told Sky Sport Italia.

“First of all, Emre is a very good player. He is a young player, he can improve of course, he is powerful and is talented but of course he has to learn.

“And if there is a possibility that Juventus can sign this player you have to use this chance because I think he is a free agent in the summer period.

“So, if I am a manager, of course I would try and sign him.”
