Many football fans were suggesting that Manchester City’s toughest assignment as they attempted to go the season unbeaten would be at Anfield.

City have a wretched record on Merseyside and haven’t beaten Liverpool away from home since May 2003.

And that run continued on Sunday as Pep Guardiola’s side were defeated for the first time in the league, losing 4-3 in an incredible match.

But it was always going to be a brilliant match, wasn’t it?

Both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola stick to their philosophies no matter the opposition - something that made for a fascinating match-up.

But it was Guardiola’s gameplan that was undone during the 90 minutes.

A brilliant analysis video has emerged and it shows how Klopp’s pressing tactics worked wonders.

City love to play the ball out from the back with Emerson building attacks from defence. However, with Roberto Firmino and then Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah pressuring City’s backline immediately, they couldn’t get their passing game going.

Usually, a team would change their tactics and go a bit more direct to avoid Liverpool’s press. But this City side have dominated the league playing the same way so you can’t really blame Guardiola for being reluctant to change.

But time and time again, Liverpool’s forwards closed down the spaces with the midfield pushing high up the pitch to close down passes. It forced City to continuously lose the ball and Liverpool begin attacks in the final third.

WATCH: HOW KLOPP'S TACTICS KILLED MAN CITY

Take a look at the brilliant analysis video from Nouman that explains everything:

So, Klopp killed Guardiola with his pressing game and as Nouman puts it “turned City’s biggest strength into their weakness.”

"ON A DIFFERENT PLANET"

And even Klopp admitted his side’s pressing game was “on a different planet” against City.

“You have no alternative if you want to beat City," Klopp said.

"You could sit deep in your box and hope nothing happens but we are Liverpool and we should try to win this way. The way we pressed in the second half was outstanding, on a different planet. It is a historical day. It may be the only game City lose this season because they are so strong.”
